There s been a fair amount of press coverage for alternative type remedies recently not least of which is NLP, a hypnosis or hypnotherapy technique that enables patients to do anything from quitting smoking to coping up with stress. The coverage has come about because these modern hypnotherapy techniques really seem to work: and that means you can stop smoking in time for the New Year without using expensive patches, without backsliding and without any of the psychological torment usually associated with quitting the habit.
Smoking is more addictive and can be deadly if not restricted in time. The affects take longer to manifest themselves (usually) but overall the number of people that die from smoking related problems, percentage wise, is very similar to the number of people who die from hard drug related issues. It is apparently harder to go cold turkey from cigarettes than it is from any other harmful addiction: a popular fact amongst the many who try to stop smoking and fail.
Well, as noted, there s a new weapon in town that just might be the deciding factor in many Brits fights against the coffin nails this Christmas. Hypnosis allows people to quit smoking in a completely different way to other methods all of which rely basically on the idea that one chemical addiction can be replaced with a long tailed engagement with another. Eventually, a smoker going down a medicated route to freedom is likely to quit, but the weaning off and replacement stages take so long, and cost so much, that many fall by the wayside.
Using hypnosis to stop smoking, on the other hand, costs proportionately very little indeed and is practically one hundred per cent effective. There are several different hypnotherapy tacks that can be employed to provide the desired result, which of course are suggested to the subject according to an assessment of the one that is likely to have the most positive effect. One of the most positive, widely used and rapid is the NLP or Neuro linguistic programming technique, which helps users to stop smoking by retraining their subconscious into believing either that they don t, or that they do not want to.
The subconscious, as we have all been aware for almost 200 years, is an intensely powerful thing. Hypnotherapy solutions for smokers centre on the idea that the subconscious, as the root of all behaviours, whether good or bad, is the right place to start if you want to alter behaviour. Chemical addiction is obviously a powerful drive but the force that acquiesces to that drive lies in the subconscious. Using hypnotherapy techniques like NLP to stop smoking is a way of getting treatment right to the subconscious mind: like massaging a back muscle to cure chest pains, where those pains are really caused by an out of place muscle by the spine. To continue that analogy chemical replacement, like patches, tries to get people to quit smoking in the same way that an aspirin or paracetamol tries to make them stop feeling pain. It works, but it doesn t address the root problem. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, does.
