Paula Deen Tickets Great Southern Cooking And A Great American Story

Submitted by: Phoebe Wickliffe

Paula Deen is now a well-known TV personality, whose ability as a cook has been celebrated by fans of butter and bacon everywhere. Her story of success is also an all-American story of a lady who beat out all the odds and overcame her greatest fear to become one of the hottest chefs on television. Paula Deen divorced her husband in 1989, shortly after moving to Atlanta, Georgia. She had formerly been working as a bank clerk, but after the divorce she was left with only $200 in her pocket and knew that she needed to pursue a more lucrative career if she was going to be able to support herself and her two sons.

She started a catering service called The Bag Lady, where she would make sandwiches and other meals and her sons would deliver the food. Already a fantastic cook, she was able to make food that was incredibly delicious and her company was successful. There was one problem, however, and that was that Paula had agoraphobia, or a fear of the public. She was afraid to be seen in public so she never was involved with deliveries.

Eventually she was hired by Best Western Hotel in Savannah to cook, where she worked for five years before opening her own restaurant, which she named The Lady and Sons. Through constant contact with patrons she overcame her fear of the public and was able to then become the face of her business. She also self-published her first cookbook, that was later discovered by a book publisher when he visited her restaurant. The book was titled The Lady and Sons Savannah Country Cooking. The cookbook was promoted on QVC where it became one of the top-selling cookbooks. Great marketing and an even better product turned out to be a winning combination for Deen and her cookbook.

Paula continued to ride her success and in 1999 she developed a relationship with the Food Network, which would later prove the most important move of her career. After appearing in several shows over a period between three and four years, Paula was given her own show Paula s Home Cooking which first aired in 2003. The show was a huge success, and garnered attention for her recipes throughout the US, making her one of the most sought after celebrity chefs on television. She also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, influencing thousands of women to take control of their own lives. She made her movie debut in 2005 with the film Elizabethtown.
