For the Dog Who Loves the Outdoors Even in Bad Weather

Dogs have individual personalities in the same way that we do. In general, most thrive on exercise, love being around humans (and you in particular) and being part of a pack. Some like being couch potatoes (even if their breed suggests otherwise), some are loners and some prefer living outside. Instinct plays a role in dogs personalities, this is true. Try as we might to domesticate them, to train them and to make them great pack members, some are just who they are. And as they mature, puppies who couldnt stand being away from you for more than five minutes can grow to be independent and even loners. Even dogs who are from the same litter can grow to have very distinct personalities from one another. Take your Jojo for example. Does she prefer to be outside running around all hours of the day and night while her sister Sammy would rather curl up in her den (crate) with a good chew toy and be left to her lonesome?

If Sammy loves her crate and cant wait to run to it after dinner is over, let her. Maybe her more dominant sister Jojo drives her nuts all day long. Having orders barked her all day long can be a little tiresome for anyone. If Jojo wants to live outside, let her, there isnt anything wrong with it, provided that you do it correctly. At first it might be strange to you and your neighbors may look at you askance, but some dogs just prefer living outside.

Doing What Dogs Have Done for Thousands of Years

If Jojo prefers being outdoors to the coziness of your home, theres not only nothing wrong with her, shes actually doing what dogs have done for thousands of years. In fact, outside of western societies, this is how dogs still live and there isnt anything cruel about it, assuming it is done humanely.

Before you prepare for life anew with Jojo living outside, there are some basic things you will need to make her transition as comfortable as possible. If you cannot afford to buy her two crates, one for in the house and the other for outdoors, make sure to leave the crate outside and a comfy bed inside for those times when she wants to come inside. Inside her crate should be a bed, and either a sheet over the bed or a towel, as well as plenty of water, especially if you plan to close her crate door at night. If you live in an area where coyotes roam freely, you absolutely want to close her crate as they roam at night and usually in packs.

If it rains and Jojo doesnt want to come inside, drape something heavy over her crate such that the rain cant get in but air can still circulate freely. Although she cant get ill from the rain, stagnant, warm air can breed germs that can make her ill.

For Those Really Hot Nights

As we transition from winter to spring and eventually to summer, you may want to keep a fan on hand to blow cool air into Jojos crate. Remember that dogs internal temperatures run a bit higher than ours, so keep it as cool as possible for her. Make sure her water is fresh and if its warm out, put ice in her water.

Remember to Socialize

More than worrying about whether Jojo is normal, whether she will get sick from living outside or what your neighbors will think about you, make sure that you socialize Jojo as much as possible. Dogs are extremely social creatures and even the most introverted dog is more social than cats or even humans. When she is out of her crate, exercise Jojo. Her crate should be a refuge from the elements and to be used as her den. All other times of the day she should be out and running around preferably with her pack mates and you, her pack leader.

And for those days and nights that Jojo would rather be inside with you, dont begrudge her. Let her in and make her as comfortable as you do when she is outside, until she is ready to leave for her outside den again.
